My name is Danniel Jacques (BmedSic UNSW), and if you have found this website then the odds are that you already understand what a bursa is...... but more importantly how much pain and discomfort these little things can cause.

Personally, my first experiences with bursas came several years ago after my father took an ungraceful and unfortunate fall at a family barbeque. As he was holding one of his grandchildren at the time, he made sure that he took the grunt of the impact when he hit the floor. Other then a few bruises and some small scratches he seemed to come off quite well overall. It was about a week after the fall that a noticeable lump, or should I say 'sac of fluid' began to form just below his left knee.

It was probably another week which had past before the actual fluid sac had became so large that he decided it was time to head in to the local doctors to see what it was all about. The doctor told my father that the fluid was forming within a bursa as a response to the injury from the impact of the fall. He was told that it should be drained with a syringe due to its size and physical appearance (Even until today my father's bursa was amongst the largest I have ever seen).

I cannot remember exactly how many syringes my father had said that it took to empty the fluid, but I do remember how painful he said it was, and how upset he became when it returned shortly there after.
